In the Gospel this Sunday, the Church presents us with the High Priestly prayer of Jesus. His priestly task is completed; it is for the Church to continue his work, to give eternal life to the world. There will be trials and persecutions ahead, but the Church faces them with joy and peace of mind, in the strength of the Holy Spirit; and so the Church grows.
As we once more find ourselves in the days of prayer leading up to Pentecost Sunday, the occasion when Jesus fulfills his promise by sending the Holy Spirit. Each of us is encouraged to dedicate additional time to beseech Jesus to send his Spirit to each one of us individually, assisting us in our daily lives, our relationships, and indeed, in all aspects concerning us. We also implore that the Holy Spirit permeates the Church, enabling us to truly become a loving community, dedicated to the welfare of each individual and the collective. Ultimately, we request that the Spirit imbues the entire world with his power and love, guiding us towards peace, resolving our conflicts and wars, and fostering improved relations among various segments of society and different nations.
